Segmenting means slowly separating the individual sounds of words and quickly blending or combining the individual sounds of words when reading.

The English Phonics sounds do not sound like the names of the letters. We help our children to recognise the Phonics letter sounds for reading and to form new and unknown words.

We make sure your child recognises the letters of the alphabet in upper and lower case handwriting or cursive, including similar looking words, to help match the letters.

Help your child to decode words, short sentences and difficult words and understand their meaning. Children will be able to read independently and think about what they have read.
Tricky words
Difficult words are words that sound different from how they are read and are not so easy to pronounce, and which children find difficult to read.
